Our Pūrākau (story)

15 years ago a pub meal in the heart of Khandallah, Wellington, ignited a dream for Jamie Williams - He bought the pub with the goal of building a hospitality business that provided great service and built stronger communities. Fast forward to today, and that one pub has grown to over 35 venues - and counting!

Today, that dream has fired up to be Kāpura - the fastest growing hospitality group in New Zealand - which has its people, customers and communities at its heart.

The business has adopted a growth mindset from the get-go, initially opening suburban venues in Wellington, CBD and waterfront ventures followed, function centres opened under Black & Gold Venues + Events. We developed our brewery; Fortune Favours, and burger chain; Gorilla Burger, and expanded even further by establishing a catering operation at The Campus in Upper Hutt and setting up a Hospitality training centre to give the long term unemployed a chance in our industry.

When Covid-19 hit in 2020, we put our commercial kitchens and talented people to work distributing 220,000 meals and grocery parcels to vulnerable Wellingtonians. With this logistical learning in the locker, we picked up a government contract to serve 6,500 healthy school meals per day to low decile schools in Porirua and the Hutt Valley.

Jamie had a vision of creating a hospitality business that cares about offering great service, growing staff, supporting communities and committing to sustainability in any way possible. This vision is Kāpura.

Our Kaupapa (Purpose).

Our Kaupapa is to support you. Community is our driving force.

In our 15 years we’ve donated over $5 million to local charities and fundraising initiatives. Our venues and people are empowered to be part of their community and support activities to help Wellington and neighbouring regions thrive.

We're here to get behind our local communities. Because our local communities get behind us. Without your support for our venues, we wouldn't exist.

Our Kaimahi (our people)

We have over 800 employees stretched across over 35 venues and our Support office in Wellington. We have a very flat management structure and small senior management team.
